Year 7 maths, age 11 to 12, KS3

In Year 7, the start of Key Stage 3, students make a transition to formal algebra, learning to manipulate expressions, substitute values, and solve linear equations. They solidify their arithmetic with integers—including negatives—powers, roots, fractions, and decimals, while exploring prime factorisation and ratio problems in depth. Geometric work focuses on angle reasoning, areas of 2D shapes, and transformations, alongside foundational probability and statistical data displays.

Curriculum items

Indicative, from National Curriculum for England. See the official document for the authoritative text.

  • Use the four operations applied to positive and negative integers, decimals, and proper and improper fractions.
  • Use prime factorisation to find the highest common factor and lowest common multiple of sets of numbers.
  • Use integer powers and associated real roots, recognising powers of 2, 3, 4, 5 and square and cube roots.
  • Multiply and divide proper and improper fractions and mixed numbers.
  • Work interchangeably with terminating decimals and their corresponding fractions, and solve percentage problems.
  • Simplify ratios and divide a given quantity into two or more parts in a given ratio.
  • Solve problems involving direct proportion and unit pricing.
  • Simplify algebraic expressions by collecting like terms and multiplying a single term over a bracket.
  • Substitute numerical values into formulae and expressions, including those with negative numbers.
  • Solve linear equations in one unknown, including equations with brackets and terms on one or both sides.
  • Generate terms of a sequence using term-to-term and position-to-term rules.
  • Calculate perimeters and areas of composite shapes, triangles, parallelograms, and trapezia.
  • Calculate the circumference and area of circles using standard formulae.
  • Apply the properties of angles at a point, on a straight line, vertically opposite, and in triangles and quadrilaterals.
  • Work with coordinates in all four quadrants and apply translations, rotations, and reflections to 2D shapes.
  • Calculate and interpret the mean, median, mode, and range for ungrouped numerical data.
  • Construct and interpret appropriate graphical representations including bar charts, line graphs, and pie charts.
  • Record, describe and analyse the frequency of outcomes of simple probability experiments using the 0 to 1 probability scale.
