What this covers

Mean, Median, Mode and Range is taught in Year 7 (age 11 to 12, KS3) as a main teaching focus. It sits in the Statistics strand.

Worked example

Find the median of the numbers: 7, 2, 9, 4, 5.

  1. Order the values from least to greatest: 2, 4, 5, 7, 9.
  2. Identify the middle value in the ordered list: 5.

Answer: 5

Difficulty scale

The sheet generator offers five difficulty settings for this topic.

  1. Finding mode and range of small integer sets under 10
  2. Finding median of odd-sized sets and mean of whole-result sets
  3. Finding median of even-sized sets resulting in decimals or whole numbers
  4. Datasets containing larger values or negative numbers with decimal means
  5. Reverse mean problems to find a missing value given the target mean

Common mistakes

  • Forgetting to order the numbers before finding the middle value for the median
  • Dividing by the wrong total count or confusing range as a measure of average

  1. 11Order them: 6, 10, 11, 12, 16; The middle value is 11
  2. 8Order them: 2, 6, 8, 8, 11; The middle value is 8
  3. 9Order them: 6, 8, 9, 11, 11; The middle value is 9
  4. 4Largest 14, smallest 10; 14 − 10 = 4
  5. 4Add: 20; Divide by 5: 20 ÷ 5 = 4
  6. 8Order them: 1, 5, 8, 9, 10; The middle value is 8
