What this covers

Short Division is taught in Year 5 (age 10 to 11) as a main teaching focus. It sits in the Number strand.

Worked example

Calculate 4323

  1. 43 = 1 remainder 1; carry 1 to make 13
  2. 133 = 4 remainder 1; carry 1 to make 12
  3. 123 = 4 with no remainder
  4. Combine quotients to get 144

Answer: 144

Difficulty scale

The sheet generator offers five difficulty settings for this topic.

  1. 2-digit dividend divided by single digit, exact answers with no carrying
  2. 3-digit dividend divided by single digit, carrying required, exact answers
  3. 3-digit dividend divided by single digit, giving answers with remainders
  4. 4-digit dividend divided by single digit, mixed exact and remainder answers
  5. 4-digit dividend divided by single digit, expressing remainder as a decimal

Common mistakes

  • Omitting zero placeholders in the quotient, e.g. calculating 618 / 6 as 13 instead of 103
  • Carrying the quotient digit instead of the remainder to the next column
