Year 2 maths, age 6 to 7, KS1

In Year 2, pupils consolidate place value within 100 and build fluency in mental addition and subtraction, including recalling key number bonds. They are introduced to multiplication and division through equal groups and arrays, as well as simple fractions such as halves, quarters, and thirds. Pupils also work with standard units of measurement, tell the time to five-minute intervals, recognise properties of 2D and 3D shapes, and interpret simple pictograms and tally charts.

  • Recognise the place value of each digit in a two-digit number and compare numbers up to 100 using relational symbols.
  • Count in steps of 2, 3, and 5 from zero, and in tens from any number, forwards and backwards.
  • Recall and use addition and subtraction facts to 20 fluently, and derive related facts up to 100.
  • Add and subtract two-digit numbers using concrete objects, pictorial representations, and mental methods.
  • Recognise and use the inverse relationship between addition and subtraction to solve missing number problems.
  • Calculate mathematical statements for multiplication and division using repeated addition, arrays, and mental recall of the 2, 5, and 10 times tables.
  • Identify and write fractions of a length, shape, set of objects, or quantity, including halves, quarters, and thirds.
  • Choose and use appropriate standard units to estimate and measure length, height, mass, and capacity.
  • Combine different coins and notes to make a particular value and calculate change in practical contexts.
  • Tell and write the time to five minutes, including quarter past and quarter to the hour.
  • Identify and describe the properties of 2D shapes, including number of sides and lines of symmetry.
  • Identify and describe the properties of common 3D shapes, including the number of edges, vertices, and faces.
  • Interpret and construct simple pictograms, tally charts, block diagrams, and simple tables.
