Difficulty scale

The sheet generator offers five difficulty settings for this topic.

  1. Subtracting a 1-digit number from a 2-digit number without crossing ten (e.g., 48 - 5)
  2. Subtracting a 1-digit number crossing ten (e.g., 43 - 7)
  3. Subtracting multiples of 10 from any 2-digit number (e.g., 74 - 30)
  4. Subtracting two 2-digit numbers without borrowing (e.g., 58 - 23)
  5. Subtracting two 2-digit numbers with borrowing across ten (e.g., 71 - 38)

Common mistakes

  • Subtracting the smaller digit from the larger digit regardless of position (e.g., 52 - 17 -> 2 - 7 becomes 7 - 2 = 5)
  • Counting back incorrectly across the decade boundary
