What this covers

Mean, Median, Mode, and Range is taught in Grade 7 (age 12 to 13) as a main teaching focus. It sits in the Statistics strand.

Worked example

Find the median of the numbers: 7, 2, 9, 4, 5.

  1. Order the values from least to greatest: 2, 4, 5, 7, 9.
  2. Identify the middle value in the ordered list: 5.

Answer: 5

Difficulty scale

The sheet generator offers five difficulty settings for this topic.

  1. Finding mode and range of small integer sets under 10
  2. Finding median of odd-sized sets and mean of whole-result sets
  3. Finding median of even-sized sets resulting in decimals or whole numbers
  4. Datasets containing larger values or negative numbers with decimal means
  5. Reverse mean problems to find a missing value given the target mean

Common mistakes

  • Forgetting to order the numbers before finding the middle value for the median
  • Dividing by the wrong total count or confusing range as a measure of average

Answer key

  1. 10Largest 16, smallest 6; 16 − 6 = 10
  2. 7Add: 49; Divide by 7: 49 ÷ 7 = 7
  3. 9Add: 63; Divide by 7: 63 ÷ 7 = 9
  4. 12Add: 84; Divide by 7: 84 ÷ 7 = 12
  5. 4Add: 28; Divide by 7: 28 ÷ 7 = 4
  6. 7Order them: 1, 5, 5, 7, 8, 9, 10; The middle value is 7
