What this covers

Telling Time is taught in Grade 1 (age 6 to 7) as a topic to introduce. It sits in the Measurement strand.

Worked example

What time is shown on an analogue clock when the hour hand is just past 4 and the minute hand points to 3

  1. Identify the minute hand pointing at 3, which represents 3 × 5 = 15 minutes past the hour.
  2. Identify the hour hand situated just after 4, indicating the hour is 4.
  3. Combine to write the time as 4:15 or quarter past 4.

Answer: 4:15

Difficulty scale
