What this covers

Long Division is taught in Year 6 (age 10 to 11, KS2) as a topic to introduce. It sits in the Number strand.

Worked example

Calculate 78223

  1. 23 into 78 goes 3 times (3 × 23 = 69)
  2. 78 - 69 = 9; bring down 2 to make 92
  3. 23 into 92 goes exactly 4 times (4 × 23 = 92)
  4. 92 - 92 = 0; quotient is 34

Answer: 34

Difficulty scale

The sheet generator offers five difficulty settings for this topic.

  1. 3-digit dividend divided by teen divisor (11-19), exact answers
  2. 3-digit dividend divided by any 2-digit divisor, exact answers
  3. 4-digit dividend divided by 2-digit divisor, exact answers
  4. 4-digit dividend divided by 2-digit divisor, answers with integer remainders
  5. 4-digit dividend divided by 2-digit divisor, expressing answers as decimals

Common mistakes

  • Misestimating the quotient digit, leading to negative subtractions or remainders larger than the divisor
  • Bringing down multiple digits at once without recording a zero in the quotient
