What this covers

Dividing Decimals is taught in Year 6 (age 10 to 11, KS2) as a main teaching focus. It sits in the Decimals strand.

Worked example

Calculate 4.80.06

  1. Multiply dividend and divisor by 100 to make divisor whole: 4806
  2. Perform division: 4806 = 80
  3. Write final quotient

Answer: 80

Difficulty scale

The sheet generator offers five difficulty settings for this topic.

  1. Dividing a 1 d.p. decimal by a single-digit integer with no remainder
  2. Dividing a 2 d.p. decimal by a single-digit integer, terminating answer
  3. Dividing an integer by a decimal with 1 d.p., requiring scaling by 10
  4. Dividing a decimal by a decimal with up to 2 d.p., requiring scaling
  5. Long division by 2-digit decimals or word problems with contextual units

Common mistakes

  • Forgetting to multiply the dividend by the same power of 10 as the divisor
  • Misplacing the decimal point in the quotient directly above the dividend
