Year 10 maths, age 14 to 15, KS4

In Year 10, pupils begin their Key Stage 4 GCSE mathematics curriculum, studying topics with greater rigour and depth. Core work includes simultaneous equations, quadratic expressions, and advanced proportional reasoning alongside coordinate geometry. Pupils also extend their knowledge of Pythagoras' theorem, right-angled trigonometry, compound measures, and probability distributions.

  • Calculate with standard form and evaluate numerical expressions involving fractional and negative indices.
  • Solve complex problems involving repeated percentage change, compound interest, and reverse percentages.
  • Work with ratio relationships and direct and inverse proportional reasoning in real-world contexts.
  • Expand the product of two binomial expressions and factorise quadratic expressions.
  • Solve pairs of simultaneous linear equations in two variables algebraically and graphically.
  • Solve quadratic equations by factorising and applying standard algebraic techniques.
  • Determine the equation of a straight line in the form y = mx + c from coordinates or gradients.
  • Solve linear inequalities in one variable and state integer solutions.
  • Deduce and use the nth term of arithmetic sequences to determine whether given numbers belong to a sequence.
  • Apply Pythagoras' theorem in multi-step problems and two-dimensional geometric figures.
  • Calculate arc lengths, sector areas, and circumferences of complex composite shapes.
  • Solve compound measure problems involving speed, unit conversions, and rates of change.
  • Calculate probabilities of independent and dependent events using tree diagrams and sample spaces.
