What this covers

Volume of Rectangular Prisms is taught in Year 7 (age 12 to 13) as a main teaching focus. It sits in the Measurement strand.

Worked example

Find the volume of a cuboid with length 8 cm, width 5 cm, and height 3 cm.

  1. Use the formula Volume = length × width × height
  2. Calculate 8 × 5 = 40
  3. Multiply by height: 40 × 3 = 120

Answer: 120 cm^3

Difficulty scale

The sheet generator offers five difficulty settings for this topic.

  1. Counting unit cubes in simple small 3D blocks
  2. Cubes and cuboids with single-digit integer dimensions
  3. Cuboids with two-digit integer side lengths up to 25
  4. Cuboids with simple decimal dimensions (e.g. 2.5 cm)
  5. Finding a missing side length given the volume, or fractional dimensions

Common mistakes

  • Adding dimensions together instead of multiplying them
  • Confusing surface area with volume

Answer key

  1. 224 cm3Volume = length × width × height; 8 × 4 × 7 = 224 cm3
  2. 84 cm3Volume = length × width × height; 3 × 4 × 7 = 84 cm3
  3. 360 cm3Volume = length × width × height; 10 × 6 × 6 = 360 cm3
  4. 165 cm3Volume = length × width × height; 11 × 5 × 3 = 165 cm3
  5. 60 cm3Volume = length × width × height; 6 × 5 × 2 = 60 cm3
  6. 252 cm3Volume = length × width × height; 14 × 6 × 3 = 252 cm3
