What this covers

Dividing Fractions is taught in Year 7 (age 12 to 13) as a main teaching focus. It sits in the Fractions strand.

Worked example

Calculate 34 ÷ 25.

  1. Find the reciprocal of the divisor 25, which is 52.
  2. Rewrite the division as multiplication: 34 × 52.
  3. Multiply numerators and denominators: (3 × 5) ÷ (4 × 2) = 158.

Answer: 1 78

Difficulty scale

The sheet generator offers five difficulty settings for this topic.

  1. Dividing a unit fraction by a whole number (e.g. 13 ÷ 2)
  2. Dividing a proper fraction by a whole number
  3. Dividing a whole number by a proper fraction
  4. Dividing two proper fractions with answers requiring simplification
  5. Dividing mixed numbers by fractions or other mixed numbers

Common mistakes

  • Inverting the dividend (first fraction) rather than the divisor (second fraction)
  • Dividing numerators directly without inverting and multiplying

Answer key

  1. 112Flip the second fraction and multiply: 35 × 52; = 15/10 = 112
  2. 2Flip the second fraction and multiply: 12 × 82; = 8/4 = 2
  3. 47Flip the second fraction and multiply: 17 × 41; = 4/7 = 47
  4. 34Flip the second fraction and multiply: 12 × 32; = 3/4 = 34
  5. 12Flip the second fraction and multiply: 13 × 32; = 3/6 = 12
  6. 12Flip the second fraction and multiply: 14 × 63; = 6/12 = 12
