What this covers

Dividing Decimals is taught in Year 6 (age 11 to 12) as a main teaching focus. It sits in the Decimals strand.

Worked example

Calculate 4.8 ÷ 0.06

  1. Multiply dividend and divisor by 100 to make divisor whole: 480 ÷ 6
  2. Perform division: 480 ÷ 6 = 80
  3. Write final quotient

Answer: 80

Difficulty scale

The sheet generator offers five difficulty settings for this topic.

  1. Dividing a 1 d.p. decimal by a single-digit integer with no remainder
  2. Dividing a 2 d.p. decimal by a single-digit integer, terminating answer
  3. Dividing an integer by a decimal with 1 d.p., requiring scaling by 10
  4. Dividing a decimal by a decimal with up to 2 d.p., requiring scaling
  5. Long division by 2-digit decimals or word problems with contextual units

Common mistakes

  • Forgetting to multiply the dividend by the same power of 10 as the divisor
  • Misplacing the decimal point in the quotient directly above the dividend

Answer key

  1. 6.154.9 ÷ 9: divide as whole numbers and keep the decimal point in line; = 6.1
  2. 12Multiply both numbers by 10 so the divisor is a whole number: 12 ÷ 1; 12 ÷ 1 = 12
  3. 5.829.0 ÷ 5: divide as whole numbers and keep the decimal point in line; = 5.8
  4. 3.714.8 ÷ 4: divide as whole numbers and keep the decimal point in line; = 3.7
  5. 2.522.5 ÷ 9: divide as whole numbers and keep the decimal point in line; = 2.5
  6. 33Multiply both numbers by 10 so the divisor is a whole number: 33 ÷ 1; 33 ÷ 1 = 33
